Jenny Pox (The Paranormals #1) by J.L. Bryan

Jenny Pox (The Paranormals #1)Jenny Pox by J.L. Bryan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Let’s try it,” he said.

“This is serious,” she said. “You could get hurt. Or die.”

“But if we can touch, that means we can make out, right?” he asked.

“Maybe.”

“You want me to risk my life for maybe?” He grinned.”

I can't begin to describe how much I like love this book ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Jenny Morton has a power, but it's nothing good or to be jealous of. It's a curse. Eighteen year old Jenny has spent her life not knowing what its like to touch someone, have a skin-to-skin contact because her touch is the plague, the 'Jenny Pox', her personal brand of disease and death. She thought she could survive the rest of her life alone, untouched but when she meets Seth, a boy she can touch without killing him, her life is going to be anything but lonely. Even her small Southern town has bigger secrets than Jenny could ever dream of. It's time Jenny comes to term with her powers and face the popular mean girl, Ashleigh, who doesn't seem as human as she looks.

The moment I had first time read about Jenny Pox, I knew this would turn into one of the favorites. I was right. Once I started reading Jenny Pox, I couldn't put it down. Though the story is a paranormal, it is not difficult to see how realistic the story was. Most YA paranormal novels are all unicorn-and-rainbows but Jenny Pox was real, uncensored and nothing short of remarkable.

In the beginning, Jenny even though with her evil powers, is likable and you can't help but respect her for the choices she made to save others. She is truly a rare character and she is no frigid, goody-goody character. She is selfish, she gets drunk, she smokes weed and she doesn't care for abstinence. I could actually see myself chilling with her.

Ashleigh was one bitch of a villain, she was like a paranormal version of Mean Girls. Without her powers, I could almost see her roaming my school hallways.

My favorite chapters were the first one which beautifully introduces us to the sick, twisted reality that is the life of Jenny Morton and the second-last chapter where their history is explained, it was truly ingenious.

Can't wait to get my hand on the next book of this series, Tommy Nightmare. Hats off to J.L. Bryan for such an amazing book.

“Will you keep me safe?” she whispered.

”I promise.”

”Then I’ll go anywhere with you.”

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Across the UniverseAcross the Universe by Beth Revis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“I never thought about how important the sky was until I didn't have one.”

Frozen in cryo-sleep, Amy is on her way to a new planet, three hundred years apart from Earth. Three hundred years that would rip her away from her love, her friends and her home. All because when she would wake up, she would still be with her parents. But she's awake now, way ahead of her time. She is suddenly trapped in between metal walls, underneath a fake sky and a light bulb for sun, ruled by an evil tyrant called Eldest. Her only hope, 49 years and 266 days away. But the mystery has just begun. Amy, now with Elder, the rebellious teen heir of Eldest, races on to find the person who attempted to murder her and succeeded in doing another before he snatches away the people Amy holds dear the most: her parents. Utterly intoxicating and heart-racing, this part dystopian and part sci-fi thriller will take the mystery to a whole new level.

I loved it! Beth Revis totally needs a salute! A total sci-fi one!

I loved the writing. Ms.Revis let the words flow their way and were sometimes almost poetic in semblance.

Example: “This is the secret of the stars, I tell myself. In the end, we are alone. No matter how close you seem, no one else can touch you.”

Beth Revis made me go through everything Amy and Elder went through. I could almost feel myself claustrophobic like Amy, stuck in a dilemma whether Amy should awaken her parent and whether life of lies is better than the harsh truth of being stuck. I also could see the koi fish painting in my mind which was very beautifully described.

It was certainly not of those books where you could guess what would happen next because Ms. Revis makes us suffer with her characters and creates a story that you don't want to put your hands off.

My favorite character was Harley, the moment he appeared was the moment he completely drew me in. As the story further progressed and I learned more of Harley, the more I liked him. He was certainly the most likable character. SPOILER ALERT: I almost cried and screamed "NO!" when Harley had opened the latch and had launched off into space. I had wished long after that Beth Revis does something freaky time magic kind of thing and make Harley come back.
SPOILER END.

“And I look at Harley, and the billions of stars are in his eyes, and he's drinking them up, pouring them into his soul.”

Oh Harley...

Amy was tough, brave, sensible and yet a daddy's girl at heart. Her sacrifice for her parents in the start of the book, the realization of all that she has lost and the urge to fight back made Amy a worthy heroine.

Elder was easy to like, as well. I could almost understand his dilemma when it came to the Eldest and i, myself, was unable to decide when it came to the ultimate question of what was right and what was wrong.

In the end:

“The glitter in the sky looks as if I could scoop it all up in my hands and let the stars swirl and touch one another but they are so distant so very far apart that they cannot feel the warmth of each other even though they are made of burning.”

Glitches by Marissa Meyer (Lunar Chronicles #0.5)

Glitches (Lunar Chronicles, #0.5)Glitches by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Glitches is a short-story prequel to Marissa Meyer's science-fiction novel, Cinder, which is a re-envisioning of Cinderella's tale about a cyborg mechanic, Cinder, set in a futuristic Beijing.

Marissa Meyer has totally proved her writing prowess with this short-story, which i wish hadn't ended so early. It was beautiful, wonderful, amazing, stunning, freaking awesome, lovely, astounding and every other adjective that somehow means wonderful.

Glitches deals with Cinder's arrival in the Linh household by her new step-father Garan. She recently had an accident which resulted in her parent's death and a steel arm and leg for Cinder. With her memory wiped clean and some new technological skills, Cinder tries to fit in with a suspicious and certainly prejudiced step-mother, an elder sister who doesn't care about her and a younger sister who suddenly sees a friend in her.

Small, emotional and endearingly sweet, Glitches shows you the childish, innocent Cinder before she becomes the hard-core, kick-ass teenage mechanic in Cinder.

My favorite line: "I have a glitch, too. Sometimes I forget that I’m not human." Beautiful, isn't it?

Glitches is no doubt a great start to a no doubt amazing series that i'm totally looking forward to.
